Welcome welcome!

Well, here I am. And here you are! And here it is, Trash Talk!

Basically, this blog is a place for me to come and talk about all the trashy, trashy media I consume for your reading pleasure. A few things I feel the need to clear up right off the bat:

1. Trashy would seem to imply something unsavory or that should generally be avoid. As used here, however, it is meant as a reclamation of movies, TV shows, etc. that, while not high art, still deserve to be examined and talked about. This includes things like B movies (Bitch Slap), super low budget parody movies (Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th), TV shows put together entirely for a studio to make a buck (TV in the 1950s and 1960s, anyone?), the ridiculous ("Buffy" and "Angel" fall in this category for me), things are deliberately or accidentally camp (Madame X or Torch Song for the latter), etc. Basically anything that, when you finish watching it, you go, "... What the hell? ... THAT WAS AWESOME."

2. The above said, that doesn't mean there is one working definition of 'trash' I'm addressing, though that is something that I may try to define more clearly as I go along. For now, I'm just reveling in the word and enjoying all the crap I'm watching.

3. I love trash, and you should, too. If I talk about something you think is awful, good. That's the point. Just because it's awful, though, doesn't mean that it doesn't have something of value to be explored, whether it's a genius marketing plan, a particular anxiety of society coming through subtextually, or just a brilliantly bad performance by an otherwise upstanding citizen of the acting world.

4. Yes, I AM a media scholar. However, that does not mean that any of this will necessarily be scholarly. This is a place for me (and you!) to just... talk. Talk about all the weird and the bad that is generally ignored by more serious studies.

I think that's about all for now. I don't know where to begin, as I watch a lot a trash, but I have some ideas. From time-to-time, I may address an actor or actress who has made especially large contributions to the world of trash. All this said, if you have ideas of shows, movies, actors that I should check out, please please please tell me! I am here to learn!

That said, enjoy, and happy reading!
